DELMARVA EXPEDITION DATA

The Delmarva Circumnavigation Expedition is a voyage of discovery and a unique opportunity for students and citizens in the Bay watershed to use real-time data to assess the health of local ecosystems. Over the course of 30 days, long time environmental leaders, joined by emerging environmental leaders, will kayak 500 miles to complete a circumnavigation of the Delmarva Peninsula.

Part of the Atlantic coastal plain, the Delmarva Peninsula is a fascinating and unique natural feature, connecting the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean. It includes habitats such as beach front, marshland, river mouths, barrier islands, and open ocean.

Click any red pin to see details about that day’s journey, link down the page to see the day’s citizen science data report, and find links to any blog post or media coverage from that day.

The team will conduct both biological surveys: investigating fish diversity and abundance by seining the shoreline with a 25 foot (7.62 meter) net, and identifying aquatic grasses. The team will also do water quality tests using the GLOBE hydrosphere measurements which include turbidity measured by sechi disk, pH, salinity measured by hydrometer, water temp, and dissolved oxygen. The results will be posted daily on this page.

The authentic data is being made available to students in hopes they will use it as part of inquiry based science investigations aligned with local curriculum, the Next Generation Science Standards, and MSDE science standards.

This youth environmental citizen science and research project was made possible through a grant from Youth Learning as Citizen Environmental Scientists (YLACES). YLACES supports education were students do science and contribute to understanding our natural world.

Day 1 – September 9th

Longtime bay education pioneer, Don Baugh (above), and venerable bay writer, Tom Horton, will launch to retrace the same 500-mile journey they took 10 years ago around the Delmarva Peninsula.8th Grade STEM (Science Tech Engineering and Math) students from Old Mill Middle School South STEM program will participate in environmental education activities.Boats will be prepared for launch. The team will touch paddles to water for the first time on the expedition. The kayakers will be on the lookout for Bay wildlife such as this diamondback terrapin8th Grade STEM students from Old Mill Middle School South STEM program wade into the Bay to test the water's clarity led by Former State Senator Bernie Fowler of Calvert County to conduct a “Sneaker Index” to assess water quality.Former State Senator Bernie Fowler of Calvert County speaks passionately about the Bay's health. The team about to set off on the first day of their month-long adventure.
